Professional standards that families can see.
MusicTeacher.com is designed to help parents and students choose teachers with confidence — and help teachers stand out by making professionalism visible. This page explains what we expect from teachers, and how our platform labels work for safeguarding and insurance.
Public liability insurance labels
You may see one of the following insurance labels on a teacher’s profile.
- •The teacher has submitted evidence of public liability insurance (or equivalent professional cover).
- •The documentation has been reviewed by MusicTeacher.com.
- •This status is shown to help families identify teachers who have provided insurance evidence on the platform.
- •The teacher has not submitted insurance documentation.
- •MusicTeacher.com has not reviewed evidence of public liability insurance for this teacher.
A note for parents and students
Insurance labels are designed to help you compare teachers quickly. We still encourage you to ask teachers directly about their cover (and what it includes), especially for in-person lessons or when lessons involve instruments, equipment, or a home studio.
- • Do you have public liability insurance (or equivalent cover)?
- • Does your cover include teaching at my home / your home / a hired venue?
- • Does your cover include online teaching (if relevant)?
- • Can you confirm the policy is current?
- • It helps protect both teacher and student if there’s an accident or damage.
- • Professional teachers often carry cover as a standard part of running a studio.
- • It’s one of the clearest signals of professional practice.
Safeguarding status is shown separately.
If you’re choosing a teacher for a child or young person, review safeguarding status alongside insurance, experience, and teaching approach.
What we expect from teachers and schools
These standards are designed to maintain a professional, respectful and effective learning environment.
General principles
Be prepared, punctual, respectful, and organised. Your conduct should reflect the responsibility of teaching.
Represent your qualifications, skills, and availability honestly. Commit to ethical behaviour in all aspects of your teaching and business practices.
Treat students, parents, and colleagues with courtesy. Foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment.
Most issues come down to reliability, clarity, and boundaries. These are the standards that protect students, protect teachers, and improve outcomes.
How standards are enforced
Failure to adhere to the Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action, including warnings, suspension, or termination of membership. We investigate reported breaches and take action based on severity.
Honest profiles and accurate representation
Teachers must represent their qualifications, experience, lesson types, pricing, and availability truthfully.
- • Only offer instruction in areas where you have the competence to teach safely and effectively.
- • Keep your profile up to date (instruments, location, lesson format, pricing).
- • Do not misrepresent qualifications, exam results, or affiliations.
Professional communication and boundaries
Families choose teachers based on trust. Clear, timely and appropriate communication is part of the service.
- • Respond to enquiries promptly (aim: within one working day).
- • Keep tone professional; avoid over-familiar or inappropriate language.
- • Maintain clear boundaries: communication should relate to learning, scheduling, and progress.
- • Protect student privacy and personal data.
Lesson quality and reliability
Professional standards show up in how lessons are delivered, not just what’s written on a profile.
- • Be prepared, punctual, and organised for each lesson.
- • Provide a safe, clean learning environment (or a suitable online set-up).
- • Tailor lessons to student needs and give constructive feedback.
- • If you must reschedule or you’re running late, communicate early.
Safeguarding and student wellbeing
Safeguarding is fundamental when teaching children, young people, or vulnerable adults.
- • Comply with applicable safeguarding laws and expectations in your jurisdiction.
- • Maintain safe teaching practices and appropriate lesson environments.
- • Where possible: encourage parent/guardian visibility for lessons with minors.
- • Report safeguarding concerns to appropriate authorities and notify MusicTeacher.com when it involves a referred student.
Fair dealing and ethical behaviour
We expect teachers to act ethically and to avoid exploitative or discriminatory behaviour.
- • Treat students fairly and without discrimination.
- • Do not pressure students into unnecessary purchases or services.
- • Maintain strictly professional relationships with students.
- • If inappropriate behaviour occurs, set boundaries, document, and report to MusicTeacher.com.
Financial clarity and cancellation policies
Disputes usually happen when terms aren’t clear. Teachers must be transparent about money and policies.
- • Explain fees, payment schedules, and cancellation terms before lessons begin.
- • No hidden fees: disclose extras in advance and get agreement.
- • Keep a clear written cancellation policy (notice period, late cancellations, make-up lessons).
- • Maintain accurate records of invoices, payments, and refunds.
